Simple Past Tense:
The simple past tense is used to talk about actions that happened and were completed in the past.
Formation:
For regular verbs, we add ‘-ed’ to the base form of the verb to form the simple past tense. For irregular verbs, the past forms must be memorized as they do not follow a specific pattern.
Examples:
Regular Verb (walk):
I walked to school yesterday.
She walked her dog in the park.
Irregular Verb (go):
I went to the market last weekend.
He went to the gym after work.
Questions and Negatives:
To form questions and negatives in the simple past tense, we use the auxiliary verb ‘did’ for regular and irregular verbs.
Examples:
Question:
Did you finish your homework?
Did they visit their grandparents?
Negative:
I did not (didn’t) watch TV yesterday.
She did not (didn’t) eat lunch.
